We (2) went in 2011 for a week at the (now) Mauricia Beachcomber. All inclusive. Great place to go for a complete rest. However, the hotel beach was mainly 2 inches of sand before you hit concrete! Next to the water was fine obviously but it was made to look a lot more natural than it really was. It did have some nightlife in the hotel though which was decent. Short walk into Grand Baie as well which made a break from the sunloungers and swimming pools.
Excursions
- Do NOT do the submarine. Yeah you see a sunken Japanese trawler, but you will see more marine life watching an spins ode of Stingray. The walking tours on the seabed poked interesting though as did the underwater scooters. Loads of that on YouTube.
- Do go to the botanical gardens. Sounds shit but we found it really interesting. The gates are from the original Crystal Palace, and have you ever seen a camphor tree? They've got some giant or toilets there too although I think there are probably better places to see them.
- Port Louis worth a look, although the local market there which was recommended was mainly just a stinking hole. Reminded me of Queens Market on a Saturday. Nice new waterfront area though.
- They make a lot of big name polo shirts and stuff there and cheaper than UK too, but I'm not convinced the area the taxi driver took us to had the genuine Fred Perrys etc so be careful.

Dived in Maldives, dived in Cozumel.
Neither as good as red sea, to be honest.
I like a good wreck. The Thislegorm (british WW2 supply ship) is the best ive seen.

If you're a diver, go to a good dive location.
Mauritius is for golfers. With kids.
Try Kuramathi in Maldives. Excellent dive shop on the island - fully equipped, European dive masters, Nitrox tanks etc
The dives are decent - not world class but way better than Mauritius. Warm water so you only need a shorty on, good visibility.
They'll organise night dives on request on a local wreck, well worth it.
Or better still go to Cozumel in Mexico ....best diving I've ever experienced.

Crassus is right - Le Saint Geran is the best hotel in Mauritius.
However it is full of small kids - it has an excellent kids centre and that means it's a magnet for families with little ones. They can drive you nuts running around screaming.
It has a neat little 9 hole course if you like your golf. The gym is excellent and the watersports centre benefits from a sheltered lagoon.
It has a helipad, well worth taking a helicopter there from the airport. It's not outrageously expensive and it saves you a boring 2 hour drive through the sugar cane fields.
One big downside is that the scuba diving is poor in Mauritius. Visibility is low, there's not much to see and the sea can be a bit rough. The scuba centres are also grim - I tried two and they were both rubbish. Poor equipment and dive masters who haven't been properly trained.
On the other hand the Mauritians are lovely - really friendly and great service - unlike the Maldives where sullen, rude locals make you feel like an intruder rather than a guest.

Stayed up in Turtle Bay, very nice. Some beautiful beaches and the people are friendly. We hired a car and drove around the island which was fantastic. Walking with the lions at Casela Wildlife Park was definitely a great experience. Lunch at the rum distillery was decent. Port Louis is a bit of a shithole so best avoided. If you're a big drinker, get the all inclusive as it will save you in the end.

Gavros, they are slightly different holidays....
You'd be a plank to compare the two.
Like saying a club 18-30 holiday is different to going to Dubai.

Be careful of when you plan to go as it isnt warm all year round like the Caribbean.
And its a 12 hour flight rather than 8 to the Caribbean.
I was going to go but my brother said it wasn't worth the extra long flight and expense for the hotel.
Nice beaches etc but he said the island doesn't have loads more going on so the hotels charge more and do an all inclusive package which doesn't mean great value for money.
Go Barbados instead.
